My wife and I are raising money to help young people in the Chapala region of Mexico finish high school. Please read the letter below. If you are someone who can help, donations are always appreciated!
We have established the Golden Strings Foundation, a corporation governed by the laws of the State of Washington and recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Contributions made to the Golden Strings Foundation are deductable in determining taxable income in accordance with IRC section 170.
The Golden Strings Foundation was established as a U.S. domestic educational charity to assist The Golden Strings of Lake Chapala A.C.
Please join us in our endeavor to improve the educational opportunities of these bright and talented individuals. Please read on and thank you for your generousity.
Each year The Golden Strings of Lake Chapala continues to advance the cause of High School education. Through our Music and Scholarship programs we have seen many lives changed for the better. We provide needy children and young adults the opportunity to achieve a higher level of education than they might otherwise get. This in turn allows them to become community leaders who are motivated to lead by example.
Our vision is to provide the opportunity and the tools for those students who have the grades and the desire to learn, but whose parents do not have the financial ability to give that to them. We award scholarships based on attendance and grade average requirements. Our founder, Marvin Harthcock, visits each student in their home, receives a commitment from the parents as well as the students, and monitors the students throughout their school years. He is available to them at all times, and is able to help them stay on the path to University in almost all cases.
You see, schooling is not free in Mexico. No matter how intelligent a student might be, if his parents cannot afford the tuition, bus fare, etc. that student doesn’t go to school. As you know, in every society and every economic level, there are individuals with above average I.Q.s. If these individuals are not given the tools and the opportunity to grow, they face a future of little hope. Many become parents when they are still children themselves. Most will find work in fields they have no interest in, for little or no money. Those brave enough will leave their homes to try to find work in the United States; but they cannot count on that option these days.
Studies show high school level education at only 4.3% in the area of Lake Chapala. This area is known as the Silicon Valley of Mexico. Companies like Wal-Mart, Costco, Sears and Home Depot are building and growing in the area and they need educated employees. Still, only 1% of the areas young people are graduating from University! We want to see these averages increase ten-fold within the next ten years. We need your help.
We have achieved measurable and identifiable success. We have evaluated and supported 190 primary school students, 94 secondary school students and 40 preparatory (high school) students. Some of our preparatory students will be reaching University very soon, and our commitment to them will continue through to graduation day. We are running out of money and there is so much more to be done! The next few years will show double the current need of $10,000 per year. Will you be part of our vision? Will you help by sending a donation today?
Today, you can make an immediate difference in the life of a child. Each $500 we receive provides one year of education to one student. We know that every society produces intelligent, motivated children regardless of the family economic situation. We believe it is up to those of us who can to help those who will benefit the most.
I hope we can count on you to help. Please send the most generous gift you can along with the enclosed donation form in the envelope provided. Any donations received will help us fund our commitments through the end of the current school year.
With grateful appreciation,
